A man attempts taking two pictures of an object at different proximities. When he proceeds to show them to his friends, he observes that they were able to tell the subject matter used by looking at the picture that was shot a distance from the object. In contrast, the second picture that was shot at close proximity had the majority puzzled.
The organ of sight works as a magnifier for me. While others view an object as a whole, I tend to examine it a little closer. Each examination brings a new discovery; a unique feel and an interesting appearance.
It is this aspect of the extensive range of textures in our surrounding that grasps my interest. Collecting, recording and observing the minute but intricate details of my surrounding have led me to wish to explore close attention to an object.
Gathering the distinct textures, I have stripped them down to simplified forms and reassembled the extracted as well as eventually changing their original color.
"The Nostalgic Nook" was a painting created by combining the texture of a crack on a wall with reflections observed on glass surfaces. I had intentionally further emphasized the intricate details of the cracks and added the reflections subtly onto the background. The selection of color was limited to only four with the use of more warms.
Through the experiment of fusing different textural qualities and the play of colors, a newfound texture and atmosphere is eventually attained and from that suggesting the exciting discoveries one might get from viewing the environment in a different approach.
"My Mottled Shadow" is a painting of a segment of the close up of a tree bark. Here I have chosen to work with a series of warm colors such as yellows, reds and oranges.
"Smothering Ms Lugubrious" is a painting of a segment of the close up of a burnt cloth that I had stumbled upon while I was out photo shooting. Here a range of darker colors such as greens and purples are used.
The process of stripping the specimen to its basic elements and altering its original color has created a different yet interesting perspective of the often mundane objects around us.
