Chio E-Xian: I seek to explore the issues of race and cultural identity in today's society, where Globalization and the rapid advancement of technology have eroded cultural barriers, exposing us to the homogenization of fast encroaching global Westernization. My work is in essence about how we as Singaporeans, tend to adopt a foreign culture, forsaking our racial roots and rich cultural background in the name of progress. My ideas are given life in the form of oft-times subtly mocking self portraits, oils, plaster castings, as well as wood and paper burnings. I aim to express and put across my thoughts in the form of symbols, motifs and icons. It is my way of celebrating my cultural identity, of being proud of who and what I am, a Chinese Singaporean.
